 AGM

RowingAnonymous writes "
Hello all

I am pleased to say that last night's AGM went ahead as planned and that the new committee has been elected. I am even more pleased to annouce that I have been elected as the new Club Captain, taking over from James Howard who has done a fabulous job over the last couple of years (thank you James!). I am very much looking forward to working with you all to lead the Club through another successful and enjoyable year of mens' and womens' rowing both on and off the Cam.

We'll soon be sending round full details of the new make-up of the committee together with minutes of last night's meeting but if anyone has any queries or comments in the meantime, please let me know.

Good luck to all of you who are racing on Saturday - lets make it a great start to the winter season!

Many thanks

Sarah Coates "

 Night Rowing Policy

RowingJames writes "The Night Rowing Policy has just been updated; It is available here on the "Downloads" then "Documents" page of this website.

Please do take the time to read it and familiarise yourself with it, especially if you're new to night rowing; experienced rowers should refamiliarise themselves with it, so that in the event of an emergency, the policy is known to everyone and can be followed.

By following the policy, you're ensuring that the inherent risks of night rowing are minimised, and that in the unlikely event of an emergency, you and your crew know what to do.

Have a safe and productive winter season.

James (Water Safety officer)"

Boston Marathon - We did it!

Rowingmeltel writes "Well we did it!

Lisa, Flick Emily and Mel courageously coxed by Emma Metcalf managed to row just over 50km in the Boston Marathon and it took us 5hrs 44 minutes. We DID end up with very sore bums and blistered hands despite efforts. Emily managed to surprise and amuse a passing mens 4 when nature called, but the madness and agonies were worth while and thanks so much to all of you who have sponsored us so far for Child Victims of Crime. So far we have raised nearly £480 excluding the additional £110 gift aid contribution. The web site for contributions will remain open for a while so if anyone of your friends/family are impressed by our efforts and would like to donate to Child Victims of Crime , don't hesitate......... http://www.justgiving.com/melanietelford1.

Many thanks too, to Andy and Elspeth for getting the boat there; to Ann for the bubbly and cheering on when we really needed it, and to Flick's ma and pa for the transport and very welcome barbecue at the end! Not sure we can say a great time was had by all but it felt like a real achievement."

We're taking part in the The Boston Rowing Marathon on 21/09/2008 to raise money for Child Victims Of Crime and we'd really appreciate your support.

It's easy to sponsor us online by credit or debit card - just go to our Justgiving page:

http://www.justgiving.com/melanietelford1

Justgiving sends your donation straight to Child Victims Of Crime and automatically reclaims Gift Aid if you're a UK taxpayer, so your donation is worth even more. I hope you'll join us in supporting Child Victims Of Crime.

Thank you.

 Archive: 2008 bumps

RowingExcapitain writes "James Howard writes:

The bumps are all over for another year. I think we can be pleased with our performance overall, so well done everyone.

M3 & W2 gave many people their first taste of bumps racing and also brought back a few old hands, I hope that you have all caught the bumps bug and that you will be back next year. Both boats gave strong performances and were, I think, rather unlucky to go down overall.

I am delighted that W1 achieved their main objective by getting themselves back into the first division on Tuesday. They followed this with 3 powerful rowovers and there can be no doubt that their fitness, built over many hours on the ergs, paid off.

M1 had an entertaining week, disrupted by late crew changes and beset by crashes and misadventure. I am in retrospect, happy to have dropped just the one place to a very powerful Xpress crew, but I believe that we were unlucky that the race was stopped on the Friday night.

It is however M2 who were the clear stars of the week, they bumped up four places and returned to division 2. While one of the bumps was easy, the other 3 required real commitment and M2 were only prevented from getting automatic blades by having a truly hopeless crew two ahead of them on the first night. I have therefore decided to award the crew "captains" blades in recognition of their achievements last week, it really was a tremendous effort.

I would also like to thank everyone who helped the club during the bumps, particularly the bank parties and marshals without whom we would not have achieved half so much. Particular thanks to Andy Nicol for acting as bumps secretary and coordinating the land-based side of the event.

James"

 Archive: Peterborough Regatta

RowingAnne Roberts Writes:

Five of the women’s squad headed off to Peterborough regatta on Sunday and competed in 2 events. The first event was women’s novice coxed IVs. In our heat, after a scrappy start we came through from behind and made second place and through to the repechage. An hour and a half later we found ourselves back on the stake boat. This time we came last and beaten by CCAT. We all knew we had rowed much better down Long Reach and that adrenaline and nerves had got the better of us. Crew was Emily, me, Net, Lisa and Ali coxing.

After basking in the sun for 4 hours, we headed off for our last race, the final of the vet novice women’s IV. A better start this time but we realised we were still trailing. But then we settled in to our rhythm and rowed them down and got the first hoot at the finish. We had won pots – beautiful shiny silver ones. We collected these from an elderly Peterborough Rowing Club official who had clearly spent quite a long time in the beer tent and was dishing out kisses with the pots. The crew was Emily, me, Ali, Net, brilliantly coxed by Sally who was very motivating. We definitely share this win with Lisa, who sat this race out, and with whom we cut our racing nerves in the earlier event which made us determined to come out for the second event and give it our all.

Thanks to Claire Allen our inspiring coach and all the people who have coxed us

James Howard writes:

Hi All,

This was a fantastic result for the club and also thoroughly deserved for a crew that has worked VERY hard together over the winter. I am delighted that the first (rowing) Chesterton pots are from a major event off Cam. I expect your bumps opposition will fear your starts now!

Well done all

James

 Half Hour ergo scores

RowingExcapitain writes "James Howard writes:

Hi All,

Andy N has kindly created a new forum on the club website for our 1/2 hour ergo scores. Please add your new times to this forum, John A will sporadically compile a new table with his cunning weight adjustments. Ergo related gossip banter, challenges and bets also welcome. The more we use the forums the less e-mail traffic there will be.

Ladies, I hear you are doing half hour ergos this week, do feel free to submit them for the league table (John will not publish weights for women who don't want them published - but he will need them for the time adjustment).

cheers
James "

 Archive: City Sprints

RowingExcapitain writes "Anne Roberts writes:

I just want to share with you all a very exciting day's racing by a Women's Novice VIII at City Sprints on Sunday where we won our quarter-final and semi-final heat and made our way to the final where we were beaten by our old adversaries Champs 2. It was a good start to our new club name.

The crew was, Lisa, Ali, Me, Net, Jo, Clare L, Meg and Justyna, brilliantly coxed by Emma M.

This was a first regatta for Justyna and only the second one for 2 or 3 others.

Well done to everyone. Next time............
